Introduction by Billy Childish

A landscape can be a pleasant thing. To stop and see the world, rather than merely look is good for the heart and mind. With this in mind I make some landscapes in a common language for all to enjoy. Blood, guts and nights of the soul are part of my experience of life - this is another, though sometimes they are the same thing.

I paint still lives, or what I call 'kitchen paintings', so that people who don't aspire to high art, or complicated notions of taste and fashion, can have a painting in their home which enhances their kitchen sink, and can be enjoyed without struggle whilst having a nice cup of tea. No international artists of repute (who wish to be taken seriously) offer this humble service which is one reason why I do, along with the fact that one of art's important purposes is to bring a little light into every corner.

A successful portrait, indeed successful painting, must to some degree reveal something of the invisible. The more you glimpse the hidden through the work - due to the artist ability to get out of the way of the stupid painting - the better. Painting is poetry; my poetry is of a broad confessional nature, attempting to drag heaven and hell together. It seems that the better the painting is, the worse it might seem, and the less it will be casually admired by brittle and rational minds. But the poetic self can get it.
