About the Artists
Laura Froude (B.A. Hons Fine Art ATC) is a fine artist and qualified teacher with over 30 years’ experience. She studied at Farnham and Goldsmiths College, University of London. Laura is predominantly a painter and her compositions in different media are about moments in time seen through her very own personal lens and this with the expression of her emotional response to these moments are combined to create unique art works. Laura has lived taught and exhibited in London, the South East of England and in Italy. Laura is an intuitive painter with a strong academic background in drawing from her days as a student at Farnham where life drawing was a daily class for all students. The lively mark making and brush strokes in her paintings were influenced by time spent in Nino Mustica’s studio in Catania, Sicily.
David Froude (B.A Hons Fine Art ATC) met Laura on the Fine Art degree course at Farnham. The College at that time had a very strong craft pottery tradition, with Henry Hammond being a particular influence. David subsequently worked and exhibited in Italy for three years. Post Graduate qualification at Goldsmith’s followed, with more creative collaborations. David has taught the technical and expressive side of 3D in secondary schools for 35 years and has used his own creativity as an important teaching tool. His work has always explored the relationship between 2D and 3D. He has exhibited in London and the south east as well as Italy. Creating ceramics that combine throwing with cast forms that are both functional and decorative has led to the current dynamic collaboration with Laura.
These unique ceramic pieces bring together Laura’s passion for the exploration of the human form and David’s ceramic expertise. David makes his own slip and casts the forms in the studio. Laura works from the life model and using underglazes creates these unique pieces. A transparent glossy glaze is applied and a second firing to 1050 centigrade completes the process. Laura and David have now set up a working studio and pottery in Folkestone where they work on personal and collaborative project contributing to the local creative community.
