About the Artist
Josie studied to complete a BA(Hons) Fine Art at Solihull College, Birmingham. She then went on to study for an MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins, London.
Josie paints portraits of film and television characters.
Through the transformation of imagery found in films, television programmes, the internet and magazines, she aims to create a new reality for the film and TV characters she depicts. This shift in context allows the viewer to engage in the works on a personal level, using their own store of references and past experiences to add to the works.
The work aims to explore ideas of desire, reality, identity and art’s relationship to popular culture imagery. She uses oil paint, like watercolour, and builds up the paintings in thin layers, to make the surface glow, a technique she thinks mimics the cinema screen.
