Anita Klein

Anita Klein, born in 1960 in Sydney, Australia, moved to England at an early age and studied at Chelsea and the Slade schools of art. She is a fellow and past president of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and her work is in many private and public collections in Europe, the USA and Australia, including Arts Council England and the British Museum.

Klein’s work is fascinating: on the surface, a simple, joyous celebration of remarkably ordinary life, but with far more behind it than that.

Much of it is deeply personal in its portrayal of home and the domestic life, from a picture of her watching her partner making bread, to one of her sitting on a sofa with her daughter, both of them nursing large bowls of hot chocolate.

“My art is for anyone who likes it. I do it because I enjoy it and feel the need to do it to stay sane, because it gives other people pleasure and because it pays the mortgage (in that order). I’ll leave the art historians to decide if there are underlying meanings in it. I want to celebrate life in my work, particularly small, ordinary moments and intimate relationships. The starting points might be pushing past my husband to get to the bathroom mirror, having breakfast with my family, having a cup of tea with my daughters, watching Holby City with a glass of wine or more often these days a solitary walk in the beautiful Tuscan countryside” Klein 2014.
