Melvyn Evans

Melvyn Evans originally trained as a marine engineer - working predominantly on submarines - but even then he was drawing and painting. After finishing an apprenticeship at Portsmouth Dockyard, he did a foundation year at Camarthen Art College and then completed a degree in illustration at Exeter College of Art and Design. After a year studying at Goldsmith’s College, London, he took up drawing classes at the Royal College of Art under the tuition of Bryan Kneale RA.

Becoming a professional artist, illustrator, and printmaker in 1992, Evans’ work conveys his deep love for the British countryside, and explores how communities have navigated, connected with, and marked this diverse landscape over time. Drawing his inspiration from artists such as Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Henry Moore, and the St Ives School, his bold, signature style embodies a sense of place while exploring the bond between human endeavour and the landscape’s dramatic, natural backdrop. Now living and working in Kent, Evans has exhibited widely throughout the UK, including at the Royal Academy, the Royal College of Art, and Somerset House.
