Alison Saunders

Alison Saunders, originally from Ashford, lived in London for a time before settling in Canterbury. She studied illustration and graphic design at KIAD (now UCA) and subsequently became a painter. Following a short career in teaching, Saunders left the workforce to raise a family. The artist returned to work part-time in schools, allowing her to take up painting once again.

Saunders works in oils, producing paintings both large and small, focusing on still life and landscapes. As an avid gardener, she derives much inspiration from flowers and often paints en plein air. She uses both alla prima and layering methods when creating her artwork.

The artist enjoys exploring colour, experimenting with shifts between hue, temperature, value, and intensity. Using a variety of brushstrokes, she attempts to create mood. She is interested in the posture of a flower, the gesture of a petal, or the slight movement of a leaf in the breeze.
