Clare Hamilton

Inspired by huge skies and ever-changing light, Clare Hamilton paints weather-filled, semi-abstract seascapes and landscapes in acrylics, aiming to capture how emotions are reflected in the elements. Balancing fluidity with order, Clare explores the unpredictable nature of the paint by turning and tipping her surface - be it canvas or reclaimed wood - resulting in pieces that are often textured and tactile. She regularly incorporates reclaimed materials into her work, with discarded scaffold boards becoming her canvas, while driftwood and sea-rusted metal become boat sculptures that embody a sense of exploration and adventure. Ceramic details add to this narrative.

Born in Cheshire, a degree in graphic design from Liverpool Art School led Clare into a career with London design agencies. She went on to found her own business specialising in design for branding and print.  Now a full-time artist, Clare is based by the sea in Folkestone, with influences ranging from Turner and Constable to Saul Bass and Cy Twombly.

Steadfast offers a glimpse of a barn Clare sees on regular drives to the valley. It's remote, isolated, and appears to float on top of a rise. The grasses at the roadside grow from nothing in winter to tall, waving stems in summer, which die back as autumn approaches. But the barn remains steadfast.
