Jack Frame

Jack Frame was born in Kent in 1983, to Scottish parents.  After attending Kent Institute of Art & Design in Canterbury (now UCA), Frame moved to Glasgow to further his studies at the renowned Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2007 with a sell-out degree show.

Frame was tipped early on as one of the most collectable young artists in the UK after receiving the GSA Painting Prize, the Standard Life Award, and the Jolomo Award for Landscape Painting in 2009. While Artist in Residence at the Lomond School from 2007 to 2009, he was included in the BBC documentary ‘Glasgow Boys’, exposing his artwork to a wider audience.

Critically acclaimed, Frame’s work is firmly rooted in the landscape tradition.  His paintings, drawings, and mixed media pieces capture the world in a vivid, intense, and dramatic way.  Frame is most noted for his striking depictions of trees and vast skies, which have a haunting grace and solemnity. He regularly uses old artisanal processes - such as gilding, enamelling, and marbling - to create an array of finishes, so that each work has an intense colour reminiscent of Chinese and Japanese silk painting and drawing.  His works depict so much more than the visible aspects of a landscape, however, using nature as force to ask profound questions about the human condition.

Frame’s work is included in many public and private collections, including the Standard Life building, GSA Mackintosh Building, and the Friends of GSA collection. His patrons include Muriel Gray, Mathew Bellamy, from the band, Muse, and Kate Hudson, amongst others. His studio is currently based in the Creative Quarter of Folkestone, Kent.
