John Stewart Farrier

John Stewart Farrier was an English documentary photographer from Faversham, renowned for his iconic political photographs and personality portraits, all in glorious black and white!

Involved in photography since the tender age of seven, Farrier captured numerous famous faces from the political and entertainment world on film over his long career, including Margaret Thatcher, Sir Cliff Richard, Roald Dahl, Ernie Wise, and John Lennon.

The limited-edition prints below are taken from a series of twelve photographs Farrier took of Lennon before he hit the big time, using a borrowed Rollieflex camera. Farrier managed to persuade Lennon to do a quick photoshoot when he was studying art at his local college. Lennon told him “I’ll do this for only ten minutes and I’ll smoke OK – so get going – then I’m off to meet the rest of the lads”. The negatives were forgotten in a loft for nearly 45 years and only rediscovered by Farrier towards the end of 2011. All twelve were put together as a composite collection by Farrier to present to Yoko Ono during her exhibition event at the 2014 Folkestone Triennial.

Farrier passed away in 2020 and will be sadly missed.
