Karen Radford
Karen Radford is a British artist currently based in Whitstable, on the Kent coast. Born in London in 1961 to parents who were both art school graduates, Karen grew up in an atmosphere of creativity and experimentation. In the late eighties, Karen graduated from The Royal College of Art where she studied painting then, some years later, turned to printmaking at Putney College of Art producing a body of work that she exhibited in galleries and craft spaces around the UK including The Sidney Cooper gallery, Canterbury and Liberty’s Pop Up Print Department. Following the COVID-19 pandemic Karen directed her focus on painting and drawing, producing a series of works guided by instinct and exploratory mark making. Karen currently shows her work at Wilson Stephens & Jones gallery in London.
Karen’s screen prints explores her fascination with colour and pattern in its abstract form, her background as a painter lending her a library of shapes and textures that form a point of reference in her preparatory drawings. Working in an instinctive and organic way, Karen allows the medium to dictate the marks that appear on the page; nothing is pre-planned in the drawing process it is always spontaneous. Her personal collection of papers, textiles and found objects are a constant source of inspiration. Once the image is committed to screen, she often uses collage and paper stencil masks to explore a variety of printing possibilities.
