One of a series of works, all of which were made in 1938 by the founder of the Southend Surrealists, Burton Coggles.
The Artist and Photographer was a frequent visitor to Southend in the 1930’s, and together with a few other local artists, formed the group that eventually became know as ’The Southend Surrealists’.
His diaries tell us that he really enjoyed travelling aboard the ‘Golden Eagle’ paddle steamer, alighting at the end of Southend pier usually rather intoxicated on the refreshments imbibed on the short voyage from Tower Pier in London.
In 1938, in a surrealist act, he set fire to all his paintings & photographs outside The Kursaal Ballroom (something he later came to regret). This is from a few surviving works and is one of a series of three.
