Sam Martindale
Sam Martindale came to live in Canterbury at the age of eighteen after a nomadic childhood living in different countries all over the world. Brought up by her French mother and English father, they introduced her to cultural diversity, books, and a love of travel.
Sam studied art and English literature at Canterbury Christ Church University, where she specialised in sculpture and printmaking.
Inspired by the stained glass windows in the cathedrals and churches of Europe, Sam creates freestanding, naturalistic forms combining wood, metal, and coloured glass. The sculptures twist sinuously, and as they are illuminated by natural or artificial light, produce beautiful refracted colours.
Sam has exhibited her work in galleries and joint exhibitions regularly over the past thirty years and has sold work to private collectors in both France and England. She has been teaching art in a prep school for the past sixteen years, but has now happily returned full-time to her first love as a practicing artist.
